- Look at the wood
The first element to observe is the type of wood. Quality antique furniture is almost always solid wood – walnut, cherry, chestnut, mahogany, oak. Tap the top with your knuckles: a full, compact sound indicates solid wood; an empty, thin sound indicates chipboard or plywood, typical of modern furniture. Also examine the back and the inside of drawers: in antique pieces, these were often raw and unfinished wood. - Check joints and nails
In antique furniture, joints are dovetail or interlocking, handmade. Nails are forged by hand, with irregular square heads. Modern, identical and perfectly uniform screws indicate reproduction or heavy restoration. - Observe the patina
The patina of time is impossible to imitate perfectly. Look for natural and consistent signs of wear: edges worn where hands rest, darker shadows where light doesn’t reach, small random scratches. - Look for signatures and marks
Check the back, drawer bottoms, and hidden parts for labels, stamps, cabinetmaker signatures, or maker’s marks. A piece signed by a known cabinetmaker can be worth 10 times more. - Study the style
Each era has precise characteristics: Louis XV with curved lines, Empire with neoclassical motifs, Liberty with floral lines, Art Deco with geometries. Recognising the style helps date the piece. - Evaluate proportions
Antique furniture has proportions designed according to precise rules of the era. Widths, heights, and depths follow harmonious canons. “Strange” or disproportionate measurements often indicate later modifications. - Get help from an expert
